JOHN MORRELL

White Gate, 2007. Oil on Canvas, 48 x 64 in.

Prof. John Morrell (1951–2025, C’73) was a beloved painter and Georgetown alumnus whose artistic journey began at the easels in Riggs Library, in the early years of Georgetown’s Art Department. Though he majored in Psychology, he soon discovered his calling in art, earning an MFA from George Washington University and devoting more than five decades to teaching and painting. At Georgetown he received the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, and served as Chair of the Department of Art and Art History, Gallery Director, and in many other vital roles.

Renowned for his luminous paintings of landscapes, cityscapes, and quiet corners of life, Morrell once remarked, “I am often drawn to what I cannot see”—a sentiment that defined much of his later work. The works on view span his Three Cities, Scenes from the Streets, and American Landscapes series, including The Meadows, completed during his residency at Campion Hall, Oxford, and White Gate, a familiar Georgetown view.

His work has been widely exhibited, including solo shows in Washington, DC, New York, and Paris, and is held in the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the U.S. Postal Museum, Georgetown and George Washington Universities, and many others. John Morrell will be remembered for one of his greatest gifts–his ability to recount a lifetime of shared moments with the same humane, illuminating insight with which he painted the world.

September 27, 2024 - April 9, 2025

Spagnuolo South Gallery

Predator Eye, 2024. Recycled Cardboard, Reflective Tape and Magnifying Lens. 18 x 18 x 12 in.

Working Title is an exhibition of three-dimensional forms made by Evan Reed. The displayed objects range from models to refined pieces. They are developed as side projects, a way to let off creative steam in between the production of more thematically cohesive groups of sculpture. These smaller objects attempt to address, more expeditiously, the creative “what if,” without becoming bogged down with internal conceptual chatter. Experience the virtual reality tour of the exhibition here.

Evan Reed is a Northern Virginia-based artist who works across the disciplines of drawing, sculpture, furniture making, and treenware. Reed’s creative practice focuses on the power of communicating through formal elements and tapping into the symbolic potential of materials. Reed has participated in solo and group exhibitions in the U.S. and internationally, including shows at the Ludwig Forum in Aachen, Germany, Field Projects in New York City, and IA&A at Hillyer in Washington D.C.

He has received several grants and awards for his sculpture including, The Franz Bader Fund, The Fairfax County Commission of Fine Arts, Strauss Fellowship, and a Berkshire Taconic Foundation Grant.
